New Blog from Patrick

May 18, 2008 – Party Time. Excellent.

Congratulations to the new Mr. And Mrs. You Know Who. It was a very good night tonight and I'm ecstatic about the whole thing.

I do, however, have less tabloid ready news and it is this: My film "the Moustachette," is now completely cast and we begin shooting next weekend. In a few weeks I'll be officially able to say I'm a director...if not a pompous douche with a camera.

In other news I saw Alex and Cash from the Cab tonight. I'm very proud of those kids. If you get a chance to see them on tour it's worth it. They happened to be hanging out with another up and coming group of upstarts currently known as Blake...though that name may be subject to change if I'm understanding that situation correctly. They as well are worth a listen. And I have absolutely nothing to do with them so I'm not even plugging something I worked on haha. That must mean I'm sincere sometimes.

Back to dogsitting...and that's not some witty of esotheric in-joke. I'm dogsitting.

-p.stump

[source]

- thanks to lostandfoundliz for the heads up.

New Fun Fact from Patrick

Fun With Arthropods

The largest arthropod known to have ever lived (in mass) was a species of sea scorpion that measured over 6 feet in length. Entirely honest, I'm not that impressed. Sure it's big and fat, but 6 feet's not THAT big. For me, I'd say go to the aquarium in Osaka where not only the have a whale shark (holy crap) but they have a tank of giant Japanese spider crabs. The giant Japanese spider crap has ridiculously long legs and an adult has a roughly 3 to4 foot body. In captivity the largest legspan recorded was in the ballpark of 7 feet, but in the wild they've been observed to grow as large as 12 feet from leg to leg. Crab. A 12 foot crab. That's alive. Right now. On Earth. See? Fuck space, there's some crazy stuff right here at home. If your home is coastal Japan. Which means you probably get to take the bullet train, eat Pepper Lunch, and watch Hayao Miyasaki movies and thus I envy you.

-p.stump

[source]

Andy makes high school Hall of Fame

Fall Out Boy drummer among school's hall of fame inductees
By TY FINKE

Four Menomonee Falls High School alumni were honored May 13 for their accomplishments.

Fall Out Boy drummer Andy Hurley, Fox 6 morning news anchor Nicole Koglin, actress Jessica Szohr and Oakbrook Esser Studios owner Paul Phelps are this year's inductees to the school's Media Hall of Fame.

"This is probably the most well-known group we've ever inducted," former high school principal and Hall of Fame organizer Dick Woosencraft said. "What is really neat is how excited they are to be honored by their high school."

Although Woosencraft said he is "completely blown away" by each of the inductees, he said he was most surprised when he contacted Hurley's manager to make the induction arrangements.

"I used to just stop (Hurley) in the hall and give him a hard time," Woosencraft said. "Now I've got to go through a manager."

John Woger, MFHS music department chairman, said he knew when Hurley was in high school that he would go on to accomplish something special.

"He was always a very quiet student with a ton of great potential," he said. "He had a natural feel for music, and always picked up things very quickly."

A committee scoured yearbooks and made countless phone calls to determine this year's inductees.

Woosencraft said the Hall of Fame recognizes alumni who have accomplished great things in the world of art, music and drama.

Plaques commemorating the inductees' individual accomplishments will be hung in the hallway leading to the school's theater.

Andy Hurley

Q: What did you want to be when you were 5 years old, why?

A: I knew at 5 I wanted to play drums in a band. That was the year (1985) that I got Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" on vinyl, and that changed my life. I remember listening to Slayer and Metallica, knowing that is what I would do someday. So I'm doing it.

Q: What was the most important thing you learned in high school and who did you learn it from?

A: It was to follow my heart, believe what I believe and do what I'm passionate about. I learned it from a number of teachers and friends. Namely, Mike Mockert my English teacher, Dick Woosencraft, who gave me every opportunity to pass classes and supported me from day one, Ruth Ann Petroff, who was awesome, Don Huenefeld and Art Ulichny and so many others, including a history teacher who I thought hated me, but at the end of the year told me he agreed with most of what I was into and just wanted to have me formulate it all in debate. Can't remember his name though, but he was one of the most important.

Q: What is your most vivid memory of your high school years?

A: We had band study hall, so we could all hang out and listen to music and make music. Huenefeld was strict, and I was at odds with him most of my time in high school, but by the end I had a profound respect for how he did things, and why.

Q: What is your advice to current high school students?

A: Just figure out what you love, and apply yourself to that. I struggled to care about what was being taught, but band always meant a lot because I love playing music. And the teachers at Menomonee Falls High School are amazing. So many of them really mentored me and helped me find myself.

[source]

- thanks to nainigamachi for the link!

Pete Speaks Out About the Promoter's Ordinance

Fall Out Boy speaks out: Pete Wentz on the promoter's ordinance

Formed in suburban Wilmette in 2001, Fall Out Boy rose from playing exactly the sort of shows that the Chicago City Council would like to outlaw to headlining arenas and selling more than six million albums in the U.S. to date.

An avid reader of this and many other local blogs — even as he prepares for a Hollywood wedding — bassist and songwriter Pete Wentz contacted me this morning and said he felt compelled to speak out about the promoter’s ordinance. We connected a few hours later after the law was tabled (for the time being). But the perspective of a mutli-million-dollar career that would not exist without small shows organized by independent promoters is invaluable.

Q. Pete, I appreciate the email and the call. I gather you want to say something about this issue because the kinds of shows that would be affected by this law are exactly the sort of shows that you played for the first two years of your career.

A. This is the truth: Fall Out Boy… we wouldn’t even be having this conversation right now, because I wouldn’t even have gotten into playing the kind of music I play without those kinds of shows, like the Fireside Bowl. At the first show we were ever supposed to play at the Fireside Bowl, they forgot to bring speaker cables, so we bowled instead of doing the show! The band in general, we played all of our shows under the radar.

Often times, these things can get a little bit of attention, and then they go away—like C.B.G.B. in New York. Or it gets out of control, and people don’t really understand what’s going on. I don’t even really understand all the intricate details of this ordinance or what needs to happen, but I do understand that there are people who practice illegitimate business or dangerous business, and there has to be a way to regulate those people. But at the same time, you can’t penalize people who are creating a great counterculture and a great art culture and leave it so that they have nowhere else to go.

The best thing about tabling this issue is that there can be an honest dialog between club owners—the Metro, the Riv and these places—and the city and the CMC. It’s great to have a dialog created.

Q. I have a feeling, Pete, that the law will eventually back off of requiring promoter’s licenses for people working with PPA-licensed venues. But what about the real indie promoters doing shows in storefronts and VFW halls? City officials think that’s scary, but hey, I know your mom: You played in VFW halls, and she’d never have let you do that if she thought you were gonna die in a fire or get shot! The City Council is scared of it because they just don’t understand it.

A. I’ll tell you, we had this guy who used to book shows for us at this place called Back to the Office—I don’t know where it was, like Arlington Heights or wherever—and he was 17 at the time. He would book shows and they would just close the bar so it could be an all-ages show. The best way to show that narrative is to bring people into the dialog who currently do that in a successful way, to be able to have city officials meet these promoters, meet the bands, meet the kids, meet the parents and hear their stories and try to find a way to establish legislation that allows those kids to still do it. Because this is the thing: Kids are kids, and music is music—especially with punk rock or whatever—and they’re going to find a way to meet up with each other regardless of anything. That’s just gonna happen, because I went to shows in basements for five years of my life, and I know there were no permits on the basements!

Q. Chicagoans sometimes get beaten down by the politics here: “You can’t fight City Hall,” “It’s all who you know,” all of that.

A. At the end of the day, I love Chicago. For all of its flaws, there’s something about it: There’s something about the skyline, there’s something about the clubs, there’s something about the way summer is in Chicago on the lake that’s amazing, and it’s worth working around this other stuff for. The thing that’s amazing to me is that a couple of blogs—a blog from you and the CMC and savechicagoculture.org—have really expressed a voice and made it so that there can be a dialog that goes on, and I think that’s the most important thing. It’s not young vs. old, it’s not suburbs vs. Chicago, it’s about finding a compromise and having a conversation. Any time when there are two sides of anything, a conflict, the best thing to do is to get in a room and talk about it, and you meet the other person and you’re like, “Well, that guy’s not such a jerk.” Every once in a while, you leave and say, “Well, that guy was a jerk,” but it’s good to have the dialog anyway.

Posted by Jim DeRogatis

[source]

saved- for now:

"WE DID IT!!!!

The promoter’s ordinance is being pulled and WILL NOT BE VOTED ON TOMORROW!
I received confirmation from Alderman Schulter’s office that it’s been pulled. They’re going to return it to committee, so we’ll have to keep our eyes open, but this time there will be input from the entertainment community.
Congratulations to all of you who signed the petition (all 5,742 of you!), who called your Alderman, who posted blogs and comments and told your friends and spread the word." savechicagoculture.com

the ordinance has been tabled. i am convinced that legitimate small clubs and the city will be able to have open conversations and come up with a compromise that suits both.

thanks to everyone who had their voices heard!

[source]

New FOBR Journal

with such a big world with bigger problems sometimes it can seem like a daunting task to even figure out how to begin to solve them.

ill tell you some of the first places i heard about these problems and fell in love with music were in venues like the metro and the firesidebowl. i remember stage diving off the payphones in the fireside when i was 16. i remember meeting friends off the wrigly stop and sitting around in lines outside of the metro.

here is a basic summary and reaction to the ordinance (written by the chicago music commission):

• The language of the ordinance as drafted unnecessarily and perhaps prohibitively increases the cost of doing business for any promoter seeking to work with PPA-licensed music venues under 500 seats and those without "fixed seating", including, among many others, Schuba’s, Buddy Guy’s Legends, the Vic Theater, the Riviera Theater, the Metro, The Hideout, Uncommon Ground, and Martyrs’. Many of these small and non-fixed seating venues rely on contracting with third party promoters for a significant portion of their revenue while their customers safely enjoy the entertainment. This ordinance will not address the "bad actors" CMC and the City agree are the root of the problem--underground promoters seeking to make a quick buck who put on unsafe events.

• The ordinance will reduce the amount of music in Chicago, make events more expensive for consumers, dampen the large and growing economic engine that is Chicago music, and create a much less supportive business climate for Chicago’s small music business community. As Chicago competes for business with cities from around the world in addition to our own regional suburbs, we cannot afford to put this ordinance’s well-intentioned but overly broad financial weight on Chicago’s music community.

• That is why CMC welcomes the opportunity to work the Committee and the City to revise this ordinance to address the very real problem of “underground” promoters while ensuring that law-abiding small business people that make up Chicago’s music economy are not unnecessarily overburdened."

jim derogatis goes in depth into the issue in his blog- as the city council prepares to take this action without input from the community itself.

i will tell you for one and i am sure that every member of fall out boy would say the same: if it werent for these venues fall out boy would not even exist.

if you live in chicago or not- this is the scene our band was born in. check out : www.savechicagoculture.org to read about the ordinance and what you can do to have your voice heard.

sorry for the long update. i thought it was worth it. and thanks to those of you who alerted me to the site.

[source]

wow. ipod decided to quit on me in the car. listening to the radio and "beat it" came on. it still gives me chills to hear your own song (or patrick singing m.j.) over the radio. it just sounds different, more compressed... anyway if you get a chance call in to your radio station and request it. i cant believe that we made this thing on a whim and people are actually playing it... and happy mothers day mom.

make sure to tell your mom the same from fob.

if shes like my mom she drives you to shows (well not anymore) and makes you french toast (yep still happens). and pretty much puts up with all your nonsense (definitely).

[source]

New Joe Blog

internet gave me diahrrea

it's been a while. i like the internet, but i often take extended breaks from the section of the internet that involves our scene, even in the slightest. i suppose there are too many things that i scope out that constantly makes me put on my "what the fuck?" face and i don't want it to stick that way. mostly i've been spending my time at the yahoo literati tables, a little online poker, keeping up with the horrific josef fritzel story on bbc, and i finally found a download-able version of scrabble for osx. life is sweet, and obviously jam packed with some intense shit. my current favorite videos:

i am not mark twain-http://www.funnyordie..com/videos/a3dbd48d3d
makin music with john mayer-http://www.funnyordie..com/videos/611387370c
guy with no background in science finds new cancer cure, for real-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0FhADUZjx4

7 year old drives, totals car, loves doing "hood rat stuff" with his friends-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iprUJeDEXUo
this serious flick looks seriously insane-http://movies.yahoo.com/summer-movies/Star-Wars-Clone-Wars/1809991325/trailers/133/880
absolut zach part 2-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EQcvKCFFW4

other sweet stuff:
-mario kart wii
-les paul slash vos
-gary ramsey's nightmare kitchen
-chinese food
-shai hulud's new song having lyrics from old songs
-finding 'mob rules' on vinyl
-finding out i have 'sheer heart attack' on vinyl, putting it on and then wandering through the lush, green forrest
-riffs
-my new orange ad30 with a special mod (shhhh! it doesn't know it's not like the other heads) other than ultra scientific video searches and wiping my senior cat's butthole for him, i've been working on some rad music, stuff im fond of and eventually will show it off....in due time.

now time for another internet break

8=======D

[source]

"jonny five is alive!"

ive come to realize how insecure of a person i am. so much that i overcompensate completely in the other direction. i am a comfort person. i love shields. you know turn that frown upside down type of shit. especailly when your dog eats your wallet even after you gave him a sweet sponge bob charm for his collar. well this is what did it for me today.

the sleepy prince of noddingham by dangler.

i look at this one instead of counting sheep. anyone who knows me knows that i am obsessed with sleep/insomnia. besides a stony looking carebear doesnt hurt. if you look closely you can see castle grayskull in the distance.

take a look, read a book...

its strange to picture yourself as someone else so many years ago when they are beyond anything you are ever capable of- yet somehow they still get you.

new silver supras.

i think people lined up at like 4am to get these. i begged and begged. than i traded some stuff and begged some more. i dont care i like them.

grape - er purple soda.

as simple as it is. grape soda is truly perfect. this is like some safeway shit but i could drink it until my eyes fell out.

if you guys remember we did those light bulb pictures for burma earlier in the year. while that obviously is one of the smallest things we can do- i still think its great to raise awareness about whats going on in the rest of the world... if you get a chance check out this link. journalists are having problems getting in and around burma to even report on this disaster:

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/05/07/myanmar.aidcyclone/index.html#cnnSTCText

as well as this piece on myanmar vs. burma:

http://www.mg.co.za/articlepage.aspx?area=/breaking_news/breaking_news__international_news/&articleid=320581&referrer=RSS

seeing these images makes all of my problems feel so small.

[source]
