saved- for now:

"WE DID IT!!!!

The promoter’s ordinance is being pulled and WILL NOT BE VOTED ON TOMORROW!
I received confirmation from Alderman Schulter’s office that it’s been pulled. They’re going to return it to committee, so we’ll have to keep our eyes open, but this time there will be input from the entertainment community.
Congratulations to all of you who signed the petition (all 5,742 of you!), who called your Alderman, who posted blogs and comments and told your friends and spread the word." savechicagoculture.com

the ordinance has been tabled. i am convinced that legitimate small clubs and the city will be able to have open conversations and come up with a compromise that suits both.

thanks to everyone who had their voices heard!

with such a big world with bigger problems sometimes it can seem like a daunting task to even figure out how to begin to solve them.

ill tell you some of the first places i heard about these problems and fell in love with music were in venues like the metro and the firesidebowl. i remember stage diving off the payphones in the fireside when i was 16. i remember meeting friends off the wrigly stop and sitting around in lines outside of the metro.

here is a basic summary and reaction to the ordinance (written by the chicago music commission):

• The language of the ordinance as drafted unnecessarily and perhaps prohibitively increases the cost of doing business for any promoter seeking to work with PPA-licensed music venues under 500 seats and those without "fixed seating", including, among many others, Schuba’s, Buddy Guy’s Legends, the Vic Theater, the Riviera Theater, the Metro, The Hideout, Uncommon Ground, and Martyrs’. Many of these small and non-fixed seating venues rely on contracting with third party promoters for a significant portion of their revenue while their customers safely enjoy the entertainment. This ordinance will not address the "bad actors" CMC and the City agree are the root of the problem--underground promoters seeking to make a quick buck who put on unsafe events.

• The ordinance will reduce the amount of music in Chicago, make events more expensive for consumers, dampen the large and growing economic engine that is Chicago music, and create a much less supportive business climate for Chicago’s small music business community. As Chicago competes for business with cities from around the world in addition to our own regional suburbs, we cannot afford to put this ordinance’s well-intentioned but overly broad financial weight on Chicago’s music community.

• That is why CMC welcomes the opportunity to work the Committee and the City to revise this ordinance to address the very real problem of “underground” promoters while ensuring that law-abiding small business people that make up Chicago’s music economy are not unnecessarily overburdened."

jim derogatis goes in depth into the issue in his blog- as the city council prepares to take this action without input from the community itself.

i will tell you for one and i am sure that every member of fall out boy would say the same: if it werent for these venues fall out boy would not even exist.

if you live in chicago or not- this is the scene our band was born in. check out : www.savechicagoculture.org to read about the ordinance and what you can do to have your voice heard.

sorry for the long update. i thought it was worth it. and thanks to those of you who alerted me to the site.

wow. ipod decided to quit on me in the car. listening to the radio and "beat it" came on. it still gives me chills to hear your own song (or patrick singing m.j.) over the radio. it just sounds different, more compressed... anyway if you get a chance call in to your radio station and request it. i cant believe that we made this thing on a whim and people are actually playing it... and happy mothers day mom.

make sure to tell your mom the same from fob.

if shes like my mom she drives you to shows (well not anymore) and makes you french toast (yep still happens). and pretty much puts up with all your nonsense (definitely).

writing this one from our nations capitol.

got the chance to go to the white house correspondence dinner last night. thanks to those that brought me out. the closest thing i can compare it to is prom if everybody was in their 30s, 40s, 80s - with of "woah whats that dude doing here?"s. im a super fan of john king, who is the guy who does all those computer predictions on cnn, so i geeked out on him. i think it creeped him out. everyone asked why go to the dinner this year with this administration? and i have to say its kind of like seeing a sweet band like poison playing a state fair and you feel like they may be out of their prime but you just kind of sneak looks at them out of the corner of your eye the whole time. besides i think the only way ill ever get invited back to the white house is if i can sneak into the jonas bros. (who are surprise suprise good dudes...) as grandpa jonas.

anyway, in fob news- we are finishing touches on the beat it video. its pretty low key though there are between 25 and 50 mj references in it and most of them are pretty subtle (like you have to freeze frame scene by scene to catch them)- maybe well do a contest to see who can spot the most. anyway, im pretty stoked at how the rest of the band looks in it, i kind of find myself looking a bit bizarre not in a good way...

theres a new clandestine site up over at www.clandestineindustries.com

until soon, hopefully sooner.

happy birthday patrick.

pee ess im constantly talking about how bad articles are mostly through i how i am paraphrased. the new issue of kerrang was a very fair piece. just wanted throw that out there.

being in a band and touring alot can make you very jaded on the live concert experience. in the past few years i have often found myself only going to shows to go backstage and say hey to a couple of friends.

that changed tonight.

i went with every other joe and bought a ticket to the kanye "glow in the dark" show. i then went and sat in a seat in the middle of this theater. i have to say i was moved in ways i havent felt in probably ten years. i forgot what this experience was like- the waiting for him to go on, the anixiety, the excitement. hoping that the show was not going to end. then going home and talking with my friends about the show the whole ride home.

if you get a chance go out and see this show. it is worth every penny it costs. if anything this makes me want our show to get so much better- to give someone else this same sense.

thanks for giving this back to me.
